Sweet Basil from my garden...?
Question:The basil in my garden has black spots on it. Is it from the sun, bug or what? Secondly, when are the leaves ready to be picked and eaten?
Answers:
IT COULD BE A FUNGUS CAUSED FROM TO MUCH RAIN OR SUN, AND WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT 3 INCHES TALL THEY ARE READY TO CUT
Black spots are usually from frost, they are ready to pick when the leaves get about the size of a quarter.
the spots are probably sunburn. try to water evening or early morning and water under plant not on it. this applies to all plants in your garden.
the leaves can be picked any time after they're 3/4 inch and there enough of them to take only 1/2 the plant. leave 1/2 to grow more
It's like a weed by the second year. Nothing kills it it is growing strong under my deck and thru the boards. Want some??
I don't know what the spots are from, I've never had any on my basil plants. The leaves are ready to pick and use at almost anytime. Usually the smaller leaves will have the best texture for fresh salads.
I do not cut the plant, I prefer to pick the leaves as needed.
