probably close to or over 12.
in all bedrooms, and in hallways and in other rooms of the house and basement and attic and garage. maybe even 20 or so now that I think about it.

There is supposed to be one in each bedroom, and the hall leading to the bedrooms. I install one in the basement, also. You can have as many as you want, but, not in the kitchen or garage, because of the false alarms.

One on the main level, between the kitchen and dining room
One at the upper lever in the hall
and one in the main landing (Stairs going down to the street, stacked townhouse) This landing is only 3x3 feet. by law it has to be there, and the landlord made us put it up.
2 -i live in a 961 sq ft house. there isn't much room.
Two. One in the hallway close to the bedrooms upstairs and one in the hallway close to the bedrooms downstairs. I also change the batteries twice a year and check the alarms once a month.
