Firewood question?
Question:I'll be going camping pretty soon and I need a question concerning firewood. I plan on going to Home Depot and ask them for cut-up 4x4 lumbers that they're going to throw away. Can 4x4 lumber be used as firewood? Thanks.
Answers:
4x4 lumber is usually treated and should not be used for firewood. Any treated lumber that is burned will put out poisonous fumes which can be inhaled and even get onto your food if you are using it to cook with. Last time I was at home depot they would not give anything away for free even thought it was scrap.
You shouldn't use lumber from hardware shops for firewood because they had likely been treated with pesticide.
It depends. 4x4s are most commonly pressure treated. Pressure treated lumber should never be burnt, especially for a campfire or in a fireplace. Nasty chemicals in the smoke.
Pine and fir would be the common species for a 4x4, neither of which will make a good fire. Burn fast, little heat.
If by chance they have some hardwood 4x4s, you should be OK. It is not likely. Better make a new plan for firewood.
Yes, but please stay away from pine (any kind... but especially the treated kind!).
Pine can be unpleasant at a campfire, and treated wood could possible be hazardous when burnt.
Have fun and be safe above all ;) As an Eagle Scout, I've been through a lot of bad camp fires!
Is it treated? If so, it can release dangerous fumes when burned. It's always best to use untreated wood that has been properly dried (not green), although if you are camping out in the open, you don't have to worry about creosote setting your chimney ablaze, so green wood would be useable if necessary. Just make sure you don't use anything that's been treated with chemicals.
Its OK for heat only. Not cooking. Even if it is untreated it
will most likely be pine and give a bad flavor to the food.
I would take an ax and collect some dead wood around
the camp sight. Hard wood like oak, hickory or maple.
Hope that helps. Have fun.
