I just bought an phalaenopsis orchid. Its flowers are gorgeous, but it has 4 leaves that are huge and floppy.

Question:The leaves have been torn a little. They don't look healthy. The undersides of the leaves are reddish. One leaf is really thin and bumpy toward the itself. I have another orchid whose leaves are thick, firm, and a lovely green. Its growing a new leaf now, but I cut its spike a year ago and one has yet to grow back. Can anyone help my plant? I can post pics if anyone asks. Thanks

This are the most beautiful flowers that one can imagine and experience. Those leaves which are huge and floppy are providing you with a very unique and gorgeous flower that last for months if attended properly. That flower is a result of those two leaves. They should not be cut. once the flower dies you should be seeing a new leaf starting to grow and until this new leaf becomes huge and floppy, those which you are not impress by, are feeding the new one with it's new flower spike. once this process is over then you literally have a new plant... this plant likes to be in a sunny area and be spray-mist often, it should not have her growing medium soaked for it will rot and die eventually. The leaves will develop nice if you would feed it once a month with orchid food in it's water spray... the contrast between the beautiful flower and its clumsy leaf it is a beauty on its own...
