Can anything be done about our neighbours security light?
Question:It's driving me mad! Not only does it completely illuminate our living room and bedroom, it detects even the slightest motion; including a plastic bag blowing across the garden or our cat coming up and down the path. If she's roaming around the front garden at night, as she often does, the light will repeatedly click on and off for as long as she's there.
They're not exactly the most compromising of people, so if they refuse to replace it with a porch light, can we do anything about it?

I had the same problem. My neighbour was very helpful though.
all that had to be done was the position of the light was moved slightly so that it didn't go on when we walked down our own driveway.

All I would suggest is ask the neighbour if it would be possible to alter the direction of the light. Even a "blind" on the light of some sort to stop it from shining into your rooms.
Neighbours are a tricky lot aren't they? good luck.

If you think you can't approach them then when they're not in go over to the light and adjust the sensor on it as it is obviously too sensitive if it comes on when it's a bit windy.
Personally I'd have a word with them, they might not even realise it affects you and they might be able to reposition it.
Firstly i would drop them a POLITE note telling them your concerns (in a non sarcastic way). If they do not respond or do not adhere then I would contact environmental health. They will get you to note down everytime the light comes on and for what reason to ascertain that it is causing problems to your health (all be in mental health!)

You could tie your cat up ;-) - just kidding! Seriously though - have you actually told them how much it affects you? Could you ask them to turn it off after 10pm or something when they're not going to be needing it... I mean a security light is to give you light when you approach your own house... it's not like a burglar alarm - it's not going to wake you up at the approach of an intrude - you won't see it because you're asleep.
So:
1. Ask them to stop it
2. Go to your Citizens Advice bureau and find out what you need to do to make an official complaint
Have a word with the neighbour, in a polite way. If that doesn't work, tell your local council
smash or unscrew the bulb when there not in ... or on a more serious note seek advice from the citzens advice bereau or even take them to court if they chose not to do something about it once being warned
you could approach them and ask them to change the angle and direction of the sensor on the light, they can be set at a height so that normal pets do not set them off.
i have 2 dogs and was fed up with mine always clicking on and off whenever they were in the garden, my husband adjusted the angle of the sensor, now it only comes on if people walk around the side or back of our house
Hi Lauren, First port of call would be to send them a polite note to make them aware of the situation. They may surprise you and do something about it. If you need to seek further advice, then at least you can say that you have tried asking them first. You could try citizens advice and/or environmental health. or the council. If they cannot help you, then at least they will be able to point you in the right direction. In the meantime, if your finances permit, buy some black out curtains or curtain liners. I really don't think you can do anything. Buy some blackout shades for your room.
If talking to them does not help, you check with the town. Many towns have bylaws that limit the amount of light that can "leak" off someones property.
1st Speak with them & if necessary offer to Adjust it.
2nd If no joy report to enviromental health dept for light pollution
3rd contact citizens advise for legal position.
4th (childish but fun) buy your own and shine it at their windows!!!
