Who came up with the need to put mugs/cups upside down inside the cupboard?

Question:Is there a specific reason?

Answers:
Putting the mugs/cups open side down keeps out dust and bugs.

to keep the bugs from crawling in them
This is done so that the inside of the cup or mug does not get dusty.

I do this with my glasses as well.
I believe the idea behind this is that with the cup upside down, dust, and other particles that are a-float will not collect inside your glass, preventing you from having to pre-wash.
Probably someone concerned about dust (or mice).
To keep anything from getting in them. I do all my dishes without lids that way. I really think they should come up with a silverware tray with a lid for the same reason.
