It's actually more like half, but that's still terrible. This is a worldwide problem, not just a North American problem. I think I would be more inclined to believe scientists and actual beekeepers than some random person who says there hasn't been a decline. Apparently, bees have been on the decline since the mid 80's. Nobody can seem to figure out what's happening. Possible explanations have been that it is due to a pesticide, a bee virus, or even cell phone waves interfering with their communication. This has already been heavily researched, so you can find a lot more information at these websites:
There has been no loss in my area and it is the ag hub of the US. I think this has been blown out of proportion by the media.
I don't know... scary, isn't it? I was just thinking today, I can't even remember the last time I actually saw a honey bee... I've seen wasps and bumble bees, but not an actual honey bee. I hope they figure something out soon :(
When I first heard about the decline in bees, they were talking about a parasite that started to be an epidemic. The parasites grew to be a substantial size compared to the bee. It wasn't that long ago, maybe a year or two, so I am surprised that it wasn't mentioned in the news recently.
