Why are sewing needles different sizes?

Question:I'm not referring to the ones in the sewing machine, I understand the weight of different materials need a heavier needle. What I'm talking about is the opening to thread the needle, why is it so small? I spent too long trying to thread one this morning. If they would make the opening bigger, it would be easier.

Answers:
As they increase the opening size, they weaken the needle. Needles are designed to be used in certain weights of materials that will require a certain diameter thread. If they make the opening bigger it may encourage people to use the wrong needle or thread for the fabric and if the head of the needle is made larger to allow a bigger eye, it may disrupt or damage the material being sewn.

for the different kinds of fabric :)
some fabs are thicker... therefore needin a thicker needle.
To make us go insane trying to sew. I even have a threader and you still have to get it thru the almost none exsistant hole!
Sad that threading a simple needle can give so many of us a headache!
it probably is small so that the needle is finer or it could be just the process of making it maybe easier to make if the gap for the thread is not large. Re threading you need a needle threader it makes it easier. They are not expensive and essential for threading not at all a sign of weakness just eyes getting a bit older. It does happen to us all eventually. The threader is a loop of fine wire supported by a metal disk. You put the thread in the loop and pull it through. You can also use a finer thread. Silk is good and can be doubled for extra strength. I have also gone even further to ease the threading by using a head band with a magnifying lens some also have a light attached to them. I also have an office light with a large magnifier. Good for removing splinters as well. The head band magnifier is available at opticians and at camera and electronic shops for close work so good luck and make life easier by having equipment to help.
