my biology teacher in school was a botanist and told me the best way to make flowers last longer in a vase...
when you get them home cut about 2 or 3 inches off the stems. cut the stem at a 45 degree angle.. this opens up the xylem and phloem in the stem ( the tubes which the plant uses to feed)
get a cup of water and pour a capful of bleach into the water and mix it well
then dip each stem ( immediately after you cut it) into the bleach /water and then put straight into the vase of water
do this with each stem and when you finish, add a spoonful of sugar into the vase of fresh water with the flowers
the bleach will kill any bacteria which clog up the stems, and the sugar will give the flowers food, which will keep them going
I bought lilies for an ex girlfriend years ago, and I told her what do do.. the flowers lasted her about a month
I have tried a half dozen things in this category and never detected a discernible difference between them and plain water.
Thats what I heard!!
