Which plant to use for creating a Bonsai?

Question:I live in Columbia, MO. I want to begin growing a tree and make it a Bonsai. Which plant to use for indoor bonsai in midwest region?

Answers:
I think a Japanese Maple works very well, but you may have problems finding one small enough without starting it from seed.

Wow, I can't believe that someone as educated as answerer number 4 claims to be doesn't know that Japanese Maple can be bonsai. I think everyone knows that bonsai is a style of growing plants and not a particular species of plant.

Very very very small ones are best, I find.
I may just be dumb but isn't a bonsai, a bonsai tree? So you would buy a bonsai tree?
WOW! I can't believe the previous 3 answers. Your question indicates you know that "bonsai" is a design, and not a species of tree. That's a very good start. You are in a very good region of the country for growing OUTDOOR bonsai, you're slightly colder than we are in Van Buren AR. However, since you are wanting to grown INDOOR bonsai, you have NO restrictions on tropical tree species. Take a look at the indoor bonsai on my website:
http://www.american-bonsai.com , and you'll see a variety of tree species that are fine. By the way, don't try to grow an outdoor tree indoors, they will not live over 6 months..they need a cold winter for dormancy....Japanese maples are OUTDOOR trees.
there are many great books out there for beginning bonsai trainers and getting one that answers most if not all your questions is nice to have as a reference. it will also give good advise on pot selection and sizing. my first bonsai was a juniper because of their ease of care and stereotypical look for bonsai. best of luck to you it is a wonderful artform
