Question:okay we bought a new house we will be moving in the house next saturday the 19th my yard has hay, weeds i was wondering is there any way rather than trying to take out everything and planting it all over again that i can do? thanks for all your help i really appreciate it!
Answers:
Cut the hay, spray the weeds, if it is just long grass and weeds that are annoying you...count yourself lucky...once you cut the long grass with a bush hog, or hay mower, depending on the size of your lawn...you should be able to manage that with a good lawn mower...spraying the weeds will knock them out.
Round up the entire yard and sod with grass. It will be a headache otherwise. Hay will keep coming up forever.
Just mow it and see if it comes back as grass,if not than you will have to replant it.
Mow, use a weed and feed product, mow. At first when the weeds begin to die it will look terrible. As the weeds continue to die and the good grass that is in there begins to take over you will see a marked improvement. It won't happen over night. All the weeds won't die at once, nor all the grass start to grow at the same time. It is a gradual process, but generally speaking a lawn can be turned around completely in a years time. Water at a rate of 1" a week...preferably all at once...but can break up into 2 or 3 increments if necessary.
Fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season, aerate, and add lime once a year. You should have a beautiful lawn in about 3 months.
