Hedgehogs , !!
hedgehogs and foxes.
I've just bought nematodes - worms that infect slugs and they die. They're not cheap, but they seem to work. Do a search in your area and see where you can buy them. Mine came mail order.
Hedgehogs, frogs, blackbirds, thrushes just don't use slug pellets as you will kill these as well.
You could sprinkle regular table salt on them (kind of gross but effective) or you could put a dish of beer out, they are drawn to it and they drown.
Put out some cans of open beer, that will get rid of them
Frogs and toads love slugs but may be ahrd to keep on the farm...so to speak. One of the more common ways to rid yourself of slugs is to take a shallow bowl and bury it so that the lip is just above the surface of the ground. Then put a small amount of beer in the bowl. The slugs will go for the beer and drown in it, not being able to get back out.
I live in zone 5, and i get these wonderful little toads that have skin the color and texture of lizards, and they are about the size of a quarter, tiny, tiny little buggers, but they are little miracles, they seem to eat everything except worms, and they breed like mad. The better my lawn and garden get, the more they seem to breed.
They pop little holes all over the lawn and garden, so i dont have to aerate, they eat insects, and burrow holes, but they dont seem to be fond of any veggies or grass..now if i can only get them to attact the birds that pick at my apples, i would be set!!
The most effective methods for slug removal is a can trap.
Take an open 12 ounce aluminum can (a half-empty beer works especially well as slugs love the yeast in it; if you're using a soda can, fill half way with a mixture of yeast and water, or grape juice) and sink it into the dirt around your plants so about one inch is visible above ground.
Slugs will fall in and drown. You can also use this method entirely above ground by cutting a hole about one third of the way up the can, filling with bait, and just placing in your garden. Remove dead slugs once a day, and replace the bait every four days. Bait piles are an even easier way to eliminate slugs. Place piles of bait in various locations around your garden, and leave for a few hours (this works best at night or early morning, as slugs avoid the heat of the day). When you return to the piles, they will be teeming with slugs, and you can simply gather them in a plastic bag and throw them away or crush them and add them to your compost pile. Excellent baits for this trap include cooked cabbage leaves drizzled with butter or lard, or dry dog food softened with water. Place overturned grapefruit or melon rinds in the garden, and slugs will flock to them as a source of shelter and food. Just crush the whole thing and move to the compost pile for removal
Apparently hedgehogs but not those that frequent my garden. They eat birdfood, bread etc that i left out for the birds. Wish they would eat the slugs and snails, anyone out there want some free snails, anyone eat them, welcome to come and collect yuggghieee.
put some pots of lager in the garden, sounds crazy but it works, bury them almost to the top, so the slugs can get in and atleast they die happy.
put some milk or vegemite(dissolved in water) in a container buried in the ground slugs love this and it's cheaper than beer
Frogs and Hedgehogs - Easy to get frogs in the garden just introduce water. To encourage hedgehogs make compost heap in a quiet back corner of garden - logs and garden waste piled up for cosey nest for new babes to be born.
Hi Simon C,
if slugs are eating plants in tubs, the new ides of beating slugs is copper wire, haven't tried it myself but a friend has and highly recommends it.
Anything Worth a try.
