Transplanting indoor plants?
Question:I have tried many times in the past only to have the plant die after doing it... not sure what I did wrong. What is the best way to do it?
Answers:
Pick a containers the next size up. Don't go from a 6" pot to a 12" pot, but rather a 6" to an 8" ..or whatever the next size is.
When you transplant use a good quality potting soil. Place a small amount in the bottom of the pot (making certain that the pot has drainage holes) then take the plant from the old container, tease the roots apart, place the plant in the new container, put potting soil in around the outside edge, and water. When you replant keep the base of the plant at the same height. Do not plant deeper than it was originally growing as this may be the reason you have lost the other plants you've transplanted.
It will take a little while before you see new top growth, as the plant is now busy making new roots. When the roots have filled in, the top will begin to grow again.
Hope this helps.
use rooting hormone, and read the directions.
I have heard that you cannot let the sunlight touch the roots , so do it at night .
It depends on what type of plant you are potting as to how to pot it. The three biggest problems that people have is, 1- when they go to put the plant into the dirt they tend to pack the dirt down too tight and break the roots, 2- water the plant too much in the first two weeks after transplanting them. (1/2 cup to 3/3 cup a week, max), 3- Fertilize too soon, (plant should be in the ground for at least four weeks before fertilizing it.
