I've just noticed that after using my microwave for a few minutes the outside gets hot. Is that bad?

This is a problem. Either the cooling fan is no longer running ( do you still hear it? ) or the magnetron ( the component that creates microwave energy) is overheating and burning out. Either way; replace the unit.
Yes and dangerous. Get a new one. It's not worth the risk.
