(note: i dont have axcess to those fumagate you house canisters things) people from texas you know what im talkin' about. Please help a guy out!! DEFCON 5 mission: to kill all fire ants.

Answers:
If they aren't near your house or another structure, you can try the gasoline/kerosene soak and fire. Most of the stuff that you put in the "nest" will just make them move. I'm thinking about getting an aardvark.lol
Keep your lawn watered well (they don't like water) and I think there is some kind of gnat that uses the fire ants as a nest for their larvae. Contact your county offices, and see if they can help (most counties in TX have a fire-ant control service)
Also, you can try Borax powder on some food for them.

A bottle of aerosol hairspray and a lighter :)
diatomaceous earth!

"To insects DE is a lethal dust with microscopic razor sharp edges. These sharp edges cut through the insect's protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it applied as a wettable powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides."
Hey I moved from Texas, and yeah they are quite a problem...

A method my dad always used was pour gasoline on the nest after it rain (because when it rains the ants bring the eggs to the surface of the nest, and the gasoline eats at the eggs and seeps into the nest drowning most of them)

Hope my advice helped

p.s.
ants also refuse to go near chalk (because it paralyzes them) and white flour (because of bleach content) so maybe you could surround your house (or their nests) with one of those two.
As ants respond to chemical trails they leave, by seriously disrupting their ability to read these signs they will depart.
To do this you need to get an environmentally friendly product called TKO Orange oil. You may find in your state, a different product that will work, as long as it guarantees to be pure orange peel oil. Mix 3 ounces of orange oil in a 3/4 quart size spray bottle. Spray vigorously any entry or exit points you see those lil devils. For carpet infestations, shampoo the carpet adding the orange oil to the steamer shampoo mixture. Also mop floors in the water and orange oil mix, soaking lightly the baseboards of the room. Unplug appliances like coffee makers and toasters and wipe the appliances down with a cloth dampened in the orange and water mixture. Also wipe down counters and cupboards. Keep any sweet substances in the fridge door for easy access.
There are a number of products for managing fire ants. None of them last for very long. Bait products will give 3 -4 months of relief. Granular broadcast treatments with fipronil as the active ingredient usually give 12 - 18 months of control.

The key to getting baits to work is to broadcast the bait when the ants are actively foraging. Place a small amount of bait in a pile and wait about 30 minutes. If you find fire ants foraging on the bait it is a good time to treat with a bait. There are lots of baits on the market - Amdro (and all of its variations), Extinguish Plus, Advion, Award, Extinguish, Esteem are examples - all will reduce the fire ant population by 85 - 95%.

Fipronil is found in two products, Over 'n Out and TopChoice. Over 'n Out is the homeowner version and TopChoice is the commercial version. Both work equally well.
