Evergreens or decidious? What's your favourtie type of tree and why?
Question:I'm a huge fan of decidious trees. I love cherry blossoms and dogwoods. Love the seasonal variety of blooms, then leaves then appreciate the extra light in the autumn and winter when the leaves fall.
Answers:
I like deciduous trees better... they have fruits... they are easy to climb... they look gorgeous in the autumn... some of them smell great and have nice flowers
But I am appreciating evergreens more. They do not change much, which is why they seem more boring. But that is what is cool about them - they are kind of eternal, always there, dependable, standing off in the corner. People take them for granted, but they are amazing, especially those that are hundreds of years old...
They smell good, and without them, millions of pinecone artists would have to find another medium for making little googly-eyed hedgehogs and christmas ornaments
evergreens shed thier leaves also, just not all at once, they shed when there is a new needle to replace it. dont plant cedars, they draw all of the nutrients out of the ground and round it and nothing will grow near it. pine trees (especially the lob lolly long leaf pine) has a weak root system, as it grows you have to trim the limbs in order to keep to from acting like a sail in the wind. if you dont trim the limbs, you'll be cutting it off of your house after a tornado. if you want a fast growing shade tree, plant sycamores.
Dogwoods are great trees, especially with the pink blossoms. I like that the blossoms last a long time. I think you need a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees to have color in your landscping year round. My favorite trees are Maples. we have both the red japanese maples and a huge norway maple in our landscaping. These trees change with the seasons, and though they drop their leaves and seeds it seems like continually they are great trees.
