I'm thinking of getting a pool, which is better, in-ground or above ground?
Question:
Answers:
Well there are many pros and cons to getting a both kinds of pools.
The pros to an in-ground pool are:
1) You are not limited to the shape. You can usually get an in-ground pool how ever you want it to look. Of course this comes with a cost.
2) You can have a shallow end and a deep end for diving and jumping into. Also with the shallow end a lot of time people will put a hot tub next to the pool so that they are virtually one pool.
3) Since its in the ground you can use the ground as your deck. You can do a lot of custom designs with the landscape.
Ok now the negatives
1) Inground pools are typically much more expensive to build than above ground pools as you have to dig a hole and then fill it with concrete
2) Many local building codes require that you have a fence that is around the pool so that no kids can get to the pool. Even if you have no kids it is still a requirement as little Johnny from next door could stroll over and fall. This is an added cost that a lot of people over look.
3) If any point you decide you no longer want the pool you can't leave a big hole in your back yard. You need to fill in that hole. Of course this would require you to bring in a few trucks filled with soil.
Now for the pro's of an above ground.
1) Typically the heights of the above ground pools are above the height local building officals require so you probably will not need a fence unless you want privacy. All you need to do is remove the way into and out of the pool. Typically this is a fold up ladder to the deck.
2) The cost is much less expensive to install.
3) If you decide to ever take it down only thing you have to do is plant some grass seed where it killed the grass over the years.
4) Typically these are easier to take of cause they are at your height when covering/uncovering and dealing with the filters. You won't have to bend down to much that later on in life could get harder.
Ok now the negatives.
1) You are limited in the design to typically a circle or rectangle shape and you usually need a wood deck that needs to be waterproofed.
2) The sides can be punchered by falling tree limbs or a careless person with something sharp causing you to replace that piece or sometimes the whole pool.
3) It is sometimes hard to incorporate the landscape with the pool.
Hope this helps and my preference would be in-ground. I think you have many more options with them.
i personally enjoy inground pools more
im into the whole jumping in/diving thing and you can't do that with an above ground pool unless its deep and has a deck connected to the top of the pool. I also think in-grounds are better becauseyou can have a deep end and a shallow end. (at least i haven't heard of above ground pools with deep and shallow ends!)
anyways, I hope you decide on which type you want!
I would do the below ground and get one of those covers that you can put over it to keep stuff from getting into it when you are not using it...have fun either way!
