Conversion factor from cubic yards to ton?

Question:I am building a 120 SQF patio. I need to lay a base of 3 inches of stone dust and 1 inch of sand. How can i figure how many tons of each material to order?

Thanks -Sean

Answers:
A cubic yard of sand or gravel weighs approx. 2500 - 2700 lb.

You need 1.11 cubic yards of stone dust, and .37 cubic yards of sand.

use crushed concrete for your base and compact it. when the patio cement ages and cracks and water gets under it ... it will erode the sand and cause voids under the slab. for the conversion. find out how much a cubic foot of cement weighs and that will get you pretty close... just gonna have to do some searching
You need to know the mass of your materials. How much does a cubic yard of sand or stone dust way? Ton is a measure of weight and cubic yards is a measure of volume, there is no direct conversion, like from yards to meters.

The provider of the stone dust and sand should be able to provide you the mass/ weight so you can do the calculation.
You need to determine the density of each material. There is no direct conversion from cubic feet to tons. If you can get a sample of each material, you can make a rough calculation. Take a 1 gallon bucket and fill it full with each of the materials and weigh it.

There are 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. So if your 1 gallon container weighs for example ten pounds. The a cubic foot will weigh 7.48 times as much or 74.8 pounds. You can now figure how to calulate the conversion cubic yard to tons.
really you need to know volume (120 sq feet x 3 inches) is a volume measurement not a weight( generally most retail purveyors will sell a yard of stone or sand as a ton) well anyway one yard of a material will cover 100 square feet 3 inches thick. forget the sand it will only wash away. try to use crushed limestone or any product sold as paver base. don't forget to pack the material as you put it down and get extra to make sure you have enough to screed and pack to finish.
