Need good gate for stairway for Aussie Cattle dog?
Question:I need a good solid gate for the stairway going upstairs. Would like it w/a one handed door so my 7 yr old can use it. Have solid wall on one side and iron rail on the other. Rail is just under 1". Would prefer not to drill into the railing to attach. Will be using 2 gates, one at top and bottom of staircase.
We just rescued a 2 yr old Aussie Cattle dog/Lab mix. Good dog, but she has had no training and was an outdoor only dog so indoor manners are being worked on. Need her to stay downstairs (peeps with alergies, upstairs is carpeted downstairs is hardwood). First few nights were ok but now we have caught her going upstairs to daughters room for stuffed animals. We suspected previously but she was in stealth mode. I realize she may jump the gate, but I should hear her so I can stop her during the act.
Will be getting a crate and will do crate training. Hate to make her sleep outside until she is crate trained, esp since she has slept in the house last few days.

and your question is? :)
sounds like you have a plan of action and it is a good plan.
the one thing i would caution you about is this is a herding breed and instinct will kick in. the pup is likely to attempt to 'herd' your 7 y.o.
sounds like she needs some toys (stealing stuffed animals) so you may want to get her a couple. :)
hope this helps.
