Can open windows during hot summertime really cool down the house?
Question:Since the air outside becomes so hot and seemingly stays in a stand still, would it actually heat up the inside of the house if I kept the windows down? Or would it do the contrary?
Answers:
If the outside temp is about 10F lower than the inside, you can expect cooling, otherwise not.
I always open all the windows in the evening, when the outside temp drops below the inside temp and leave them open all night. The next morning when the outside temp comes up to within 8F of the inside temp, all windows are closed again.
i agree with Heinz--makes sense scientifically, and i've also found it to be true in practice. on a super-hot day, i've found that the house stays cooler than it is outside until mid to late afternoon, when it starts to equalize. eventually, it gets cooler inside than outside, and then i open up the windows or doors to let the cooler air in. works like a charm, and it's cheaper and better for the environment than air conditioning!
I always keep my windows closed on the hot days. The house is cooled off during the night and keeping it closed keeps the hot air out.
No, you should leave your windows open during the night to let all the cool air in and in the morning when it starts warming up close the windows and the blinds/curtains. I keep the bedroom doors shut also it made a big different for sleeping at night.
