Check WormsWay.com it is a hydroponic store that has plenty of info on composting. You can buy units that break down the compost without stinking your house up.it makes very good nutrients for plants
You will find one at any decent garden centre, alternatively you could always try a wormery which will do the same job and i think you can get these in smaller sizes than compost bins

Any composter will only produce as much compost as you put rubbish in.

or failing that you could cut the bottom out of an old plastic swing bin, as the contents need to be placed directly on to the earth, so worms can do their job.
my mum has done this as she has no room for a large compost bin & has a very small garden, with no lawn.
Other than an agricultural store like Agway or Blue Seal Feeds- you make one yourself from wood or by digging a hole in the ground and placing a 5 gal. pail in it. Make sure there are holes in the bottom and keep it covered. You may have to place a rock on the top of the cover so animals don't get into it. Turn it every month or so. This worked for me.

I live in the country and what I did was go to Dollar General and bought a cheap trash can with a lid, (have any size you want) and thats what I use. It is small enough not to be in my way and still big enough to do what I need to do. Clean up is a breeze wash out with a water hose.
Anything can be used as a compost bin as long as you give it some ventilation and rotate the compost.
For a small composter use a metal trash bin with a lid.
Just remember to aerate the material as it begins to break down, by either rolling the can on it's side( with the lid secure) or use a small shovel or pitchfork.

For my daily use in the kitchen I use an old large coffee can with the plastic lid. To make the can more attractive cover it with a washable material like contactpaper.

Alternatively, you could make your own. You can find plans and supplies lists on-line.
If you only have small amounts you can use 5 gal plastic buckets or even trash bags
The councill do bins in 2 or 3 sizes. If you have the space it's worth having a reasonable sized one but if you only have a couple of planters it will seem like a long wait for the scraps to produce sufficient to fill the planters and the bins do need more than just kitchen waste. Try the local library to see if they have leaflets on composting to see if it's worthwhile.
