My pool equipment has a glass jar that keeps getting discoloredt does water in it? What does this mean?

Question:What are the steps for backwashing it? What does it mean if the water level keeps dropping daily?

Answers:
This glass jar is known as a sight glass. It is used when backwashing so you can see when the water runs clear. If it is getting dirty water in it when filtering water into the pool, you likely have a gasket problem.

Ok... here goes... the glass jar should be on something known as a multiport valve. It is usually a six-position valve on top of or in front of the filter tank. The normal operating position is the "filter" position. To backwash, turn the pump off, rotate the handle on the valve to the "backwash" position (usually 180 degrees ), and turn the pump back on. Let it run for a minute or so (until the water in the glass jar is clear. You might want to attach a discharge hose to the outlet... It'll make a mess.) Turn the pump off again, move the valve to the "rinse" position. Turn the pump on for a few seconds. Shut it off again, then turn the handle back to the "filter" position. Turn the pump back on, and the filter will be operating in the filtering mode again. (If you have a D.E. filter, add new D.E. to the skimmer).

There is usually a five-spoke gasket (known as a spider gasket, some may have six spokes) under the cover of the multiport valve. If you are getting water in the sight glass when operating in the filter position, most likely that gasket is damaged and needs to be replaced. (which would also explain your dropping water level...)

ok mick,i put 'backwash pool?' in the search for questions bar

The "glass jar" is called a sight glass. You use this to look at the water coming out of your filter when you are back washing to see if it is clean and clear or murky and discolored. Thr proper backwash proceedure is to backwash until the sight glass is clear (about 60 seconds) and then rinse for 30 seconds, then back to filter. Shut off your pump before moving the dial valve between backwash, rinse and filter to avoid damaging your filter. If the water level is dropping daily you have a leak in your pool system. Mark with pencil on your skimmer face plate the water level and then check in 24 hours. Record the amount of water loss. Next shut down your circulation system and wait another 24 hours and record the amount of water loss. Now you know if the leak is the same or different when your filtration system is running. Take this information and call a swimming pool repair company. Hope this helps.
