Question:I have just started having the problem, they are in my kitchen cupboards but that's not where they are coming from!
I think they may have nested in or around my central heating boiler.I need to know what i'm looking for.
Thanks.

Nippon liquid is brilliant stuff and you can make it more attractive by adding a couple of drops of cheap cola. After a couple of days of that, stuff whole cloves in the little holes where they come in (you have to watch them when they return to the nest).
The nest could be outside, try looking at the wall and ground. You may see a mound or just tiny holes. A couple of kettles of boiling water puts them off but you'll have to do that several times or they come back.
If they have nested indoors, then keep at it with the Nippon and sprinkle cloves around, they hate the smell and they'll move.
Or get in there with a cylinder hoover...

like a big hill...get the environmental health out.
sand in a little hill
We get lots in the summer in our garden. The earth is slightly raised and looks "fluffy".

The most obvious source of the ants is through the airbricks (ventilation bricks) in your external walls.

Once I have found the nest I douse the area with ant powder (Wilkinsons own brand is as good as any and quite cheap). The nests are never erradicated but the nest "moves" and never grows beyond control.
they excavate the ground so small piles of soil outdoors but if youv've got them indoors try what I did, if you know roughly where thet are give the wall/floor a good thump, and good thump, several times and watch them come scurrying out to investigate.
when i had them they were like mole hills. loose mounds of raised earth in the garden. but they wont likely be inside your house. the nest will be elsewhere. use nipon all around your house. i used the ant traps and they were brilliant.
an ant has 3 segments ... ooo ... with anteney on the first segment ... legs on the middle segment ... the third segment is the tail end
