Does tin foil on windows work?

Question:The weather is starting to heat up out here in California and I need to keep my apartment cool. I live on the second floor and it gets super HOT!! I just put in one of those window A/C things and that has helped but I'm wondering if I could do more.

Would covering the windows with tin foil keep the heat out? I know it looks tacky but I don't want to invest money into a place I'm just renting. The sun hits the windows in the late afternoon and really cooks the place. By the time I get home from work it can be well over 85 degrees in the house. UGH!

Answers:
LOL yes it does work, and yes it will look tacky.
In one of my apartments, I actually went to a car store like auto zone, and bought car tint.
Instead of taking the time and effort to properly put up the tint, i just taped it with scotch tape.
Then OVER the tint I put the alum foil.
That way my neighbors would never see the the foil, and I was albe to have a nice, cool, dark room! :)

yes it will work, it may look tacky, but it will keep those bills down. i use shades and pull them before i go to work, but in college one time i had the same problem you are having.
insulated curtains would still let the light in
foil would block it compleatly
Tin foil will reflect the heat. Good luck!
You might also try white curtains or shades as they reflect light. If you have any window that opens at the top, then open it a small bit to give the heat a way out.
Did't the apartment come with blinds? They are cheap and it seems like standard on all apartments. Why not ask the owner for some. And please don't use tin foil not only is it tacky but it makes the entire neighborhood look like sh__. Take care.
If you want something you can take down though, try hanging a thick blanket over the windows with thumb tacks before you leave in the mornings. That way when you want to see outside, you can simply take the blanket down. Worked for us!
