Ways to make more money per acre?

Question:My family used to farm a lot but now we only own about 40 acres. What are some suggestions for how to increase profits/acre beyond what is possible with the common commercial crops that are grown in my area (soybeans, corn, milo, wheat)? We live in southern illinois.

Answers:
Try pumpkins, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, gourds, grapes, etc. Pick your own or you pick and they buy or both. Organic produce is quickly becoming the way to go. Consider going organic.

Any tree would take to long to turn a profit. I'd go with strawberries as a pick your own. Be sure if have the proper insurance in case someone would be injured on your property.
You might plant speciality crops that are popular in your area, like ginger or, tomatillos. Pick your own produce setups create higher than average profits, too.
in our area,25 miles from seattle, many of our friends have acres of all kinds of vegtables. they do good business! a pumpkin farm is fantastic.have a petting zoo, pony rides, hay bales so kids can climb on them.lots of things work better than plain crops .besure you have insurance.good luck!
