Does anyone know if the American White Currant is the same as the UK's gooseberry?
Question:I saw a photograph on the label of the bush that I bought and it looked the same as the gooseberry to me.. BUT
we need to know, so that we can make pies, crumbles and fruit jam! The bush is bearing lots of fruit!
There must be someone there who knows please!
Answers:
currants and gooseberries are the same. your fruit may taste a bit different than what you re accustomed to, though. fruits and veggies grown in different soils often taste different.
enjoy your pies and jams! :)
A currant is a small grape-type thing which when dried, turns into the currants we use in cooking [similar to raisins, only teeny and rounder]. Gooseberries are a whole 'nother fruit, and grow in UK and US [colder climates] and are greeny-yellow with shadowy stripe-y effects, round & plump and the size of a fat grape, and have a picker-sticker at one end. Gooseberries are what you've got? Lucky you!--and gooooooood cooking! You'd have currants if your bush were a vine!
