Cirtus Trees in South Florida?

Question:I want to get my mom an orange or grapefruit tree for mothers day...but i was wondering if it was wise to purchase citrus trees at this time of the year in south florida and if they will be successful when planted during this time of the year. also, what size tree should i purchase in order for the tree to actually live and grow? any information would be great. thanks

I grew up in Ft Liquordale, sorry, Lauderdale. Any time except the dead of winter is an acceptable time to buy and replant citrus. The problem is Mediterranean Black Flies. If one tree in the neighborhood becomes infested, the county will cut ALL citrus trees in the surrounding area down. Get a two or three year old tree for $15 or $20 dollars, then hope for the best.
BTW, haven't been back in four years. How about a coconut tree? lethal Yellowing has killed off so many it's becoming rare to see healthy ones any more. Buy Mom a coconut at the market and plant it for her ! (bury it half-way down in a sunny place and make sure it doesn't dry out. easy as pie)
