Answers:
There are not any preventative products on the market that a homeowner can buy that are effective. As far as things you can do,Eliminate conducive conditions,Make sure there is no wood-soil contact, trees touching the home, moisture conditions in the home or against it,rotten wood is replaced and sealed, mulch is not piled against the house, and firewood is stored away from the home. The only products that will work are done by a professional,do not take shortcuts in protecting your home.Call a Pest Control Professional and have a proper treatment performed. The best products are baits.Sprays just scatter the ants and will result in a larger infestation
boiling water
boiling water. creasote if you can find it now it's banned.
lemon will make them go away ..
Seal up the cracks and gaps through which they are gaining entry.
get sugar ,boil your kettle , and pour it all over them
Can you get hold of glue? The kind used to trap mice. Same procedure, put it on a tape and once they go over it is no getting out of it.
Wasps spray can kill them if you can locate them many at the time just spray them. Then find where they come in from and seal the cracks.
spray affected areas with a mixture of lemon juice and water.
put talcum powder down where they are coming in it will kill them
Pepper or talc around the outside of the house just make sure there is no brake in the line
Put baking powder on their exit holes, and they will soon explode.
Little mounds of corn meal in the most affected areas works well. They will feed on it and take it back for the rest of the ants to feed on...they can not digest it and it kills them within a few days.
Do you know where the ants are coming from? Figuring this out should be your first step. Ants tend to follow certain paths from their nest to a feeding site. When they find something tasty they lay down a scent trail and the other ants follow this. Watch them for a while and see where they go.
Once you've found the nest, you can deal with it. If they are in the house, you need to eradicate the nest - you may have to call in the experts. If it's outside the house, can you block their path to stop them getting in? If they're in soil, you could try digging out the nest and pouring on boiling water. However, it won't get rid of them all and you'll need to cover up before you start - ant bites hurt!
If you do try to block their path, it's also important to get rid of that scent trail. Give your floors and any other surface they've walked on a good scrub and, yes, lemon juice will help get rid of the scent. Also, put anything they might want to eat into cupboards or containers that are hard to get into.
Even if all this doesn't work, you can console yourself with the thought that ant colonies generally die off, so eventually they will just go away.
