Can I use a solution of bicarbonate of Soda to raise the pH of the soil?

Question:The pH of my soil is just over 5.0 and it needs to be 6.6 - 6.8.

Would it be ok to use a solution of Bicarbonate of Soda to raise it a bit?

Answers:
My guess is that Bicarb would raise the pH, but probably only for a short period of time (it would wash out quickly because it is in a form that is readily soluable), and would be expensive compared to other treatments for a larger area.

The more common way to raise soil pH is to use ground or powdered limestone. This is readily available in garden centers in bags or bulk.

If you have a lab test your soil (I have used the Univ. of Mass. soil lab, which does a nice soil test for about $13 a sample), the lab will usually also provide you with guidance on how to correct your soil problems, including the type and amount of amendments to use.

Good luck!
