Mosquitoes that don't bite?
Question:I am in Toronto and since the beginning of this month, I started seeing mosquito-like flying insects outside my window. They look smaller than mosquitoes, and are definitely not crane flies. There are some inside my apartment, but so far I haven’t been bitten by them. Does anyone know what they are? Thanks in advance.

My two answers would be either male mosquito or midge. Telling the difference is difficult without training. Mosquitos have piercing-sucking mouth parts, though males do not use them to drink blood. Midges do not have piercing-sucking mouthparts. Male midges and mosquitos both have plumose (feather-like) antennae that they use for detecting female pheromones. Your best bet is to catch some, kill them, and look at the mouth-parts with a magnifying glass. Without = more that likely midge. With = mosquito for sure.
Male mosquitoes are smaller than female ones and they don't bite humans, they drink the juice from fruits, I think.
Probably male mosquitos...
