Why do houses in the US not have a lightning rod?
Question:I live in Houston, TX and we have several thunderstorms each month. I am originally from Germany and every house there has a lightning rod and there are rarely any houses that burst into flames when they get hit, thanks to the rod. So, why don't they use them on the houses over here in the States - especially since they don't build the houses like in Europe (there we use concrete and bricks and real shingles made out of stone; over here in Texas they use wood and sheet rock...) ...
Answers:
They aren't part of housing code and so they aren't regulated, and they aren't mandatory.Nedd to be.
But I live in Arkansas and I do have Two on the top of my House,we had them put in and grounded. All home owners ought to check it out. Really great Question.
I live in the U.S., and many of the homes I have lived in have lightning rods. When I build my own home, I will install one. I think it's just good, common sense.
Ahh, I see the Thumbs Down trolls are at it again. How can anyone disagree with this answer, or the one below??! It's based on fact, trolls, not opinion. Maybe the trolls are just pissed because their houses (where they lived in the basement at the age of 35 while their parents payed the rent) got struck by lightning and burned down.
Yeah cuz in California we don't need lightning rods because most house are built smaller and not too high xD only apartments and higher buildings in CA have them ^_^
Yeah but i agree with the other guy! Its safer to install another one
we have lightning rods. our houses are wired with a ground wire running through every line. all wires and plumbing pipes are then grounded to a metel spike somewhere near your meter or elecric service. this provides a good ground, but a big bolt will still cause damage no matter what you do.
EXPENSIVE & MOSTLY USELESS UNLESS YOU'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PRARIE/PLATEAU.
It has been proven that lightning rods are useless. It would take a rod and wire as thick as 1 foot to handle the power of a lightning strike. Even then, damage can happen.
