Wood Fire Air Flow?
Question:I am looking for help with my built in fireplace. There is a lever on the right hand side that you can push away from you, or pull towards you towards you. If I am correct, this is called a "Damper" ? My question is, in which position of the damper is in the open position (away towards the back ? or pull towards you).
And for ultimate control. where should this "damper" be? My wood seems to burn very fast and I guess that I would like it to burn more slowly..
If the below image is not visible or available, please let me know.
Thanks!!

The lever on the right-hand side is most likely an "Outside Air" vent; these are common on built-in fireplaces, and when you push/pull the lever, you are opening/closing this vent. This allows air in from the outside to assist combustion; I would suggest that pushing it in will close this vent, which, by cutting off some of the available combustion air, will help your fire burn more slowly.
The "Damper," by the way, should be located near the top of the burn chamber. The damper is what you open to let the flue gases/smoke out through the chimney; you only need to close it if you are getting a draft when the fireplace is not burning. Since you have not complained about smoke billowing into the room when you burn a fire, it is probably open.
Look up your chimney and see if you can see day light If not it is closed if no its closed , Try it out good luck
Roll 1 sheet of newspaper to form a cylinder . Light it while holding it in the fireplace, if the smoke comes toward house the damper is closed, if flame flows upright the damper is open
