Any info on tenants rights?
Question:Have lived in rented flat for nearly ten years. Contacted landlord recently as some repairs and renovations needed to be made and he gave us notice on the flat. Our contract is up for renewal in two months, but we get married in 2 weeks and go on honeymoon meaning when we return, we have but 4 weeks to find a new home! This sucks! Do we have any rights due to our long tenancy even though it is a year on year (yet unbroken) contract? Or does anyone have any advice for us? We have been looking for a house to buy, but have no luck as yet meaning we really need to stay in the flat a while longer. All advice gratefully accepted!

it sounds like you might be in the U.K.. here in the states, the landlord is within his rights not to renew the lease. but with written notice he has 5 working days to address your repair needs. make him do them. i would love to be able to give you good news as a wedding gift, but i cant. hope you have a long and fruitful marriage. best of luck, god bless.

Legally you or he are only required to honour the period of notice stated on your lease. I dont think there is anything you can do. If your notice is in writing take it to your local council and they will have to put you on the homeless list which gives them certain obligations about how long they can take to rehome you. It is lousy timing with the wedding but at the end of the day home is what you make it and as long as you are together you will be fine
Have had a similar experience - I sought advice through the Citizens Advice Bureaux, who can determine if you have protected tenancy rights - it depends on the year / date you originally signed the lease - I think in the year on or before 1989. Also there may be some useful info on /in your rent book regarding tenants / landlords right and also in your original lease.
If you go to CAB take all documents with you.

your landlord has not right to do this...by law he has to give you 28 days notice but if you want to you can sit it out and he will have to take you to court for eviction this can take 28 days then the court has to give another 28 day notice so you would have 2 months or so.. go to c.a.b and ask them to help they have solicitors that will tell you where you stand..also get hold of the local council asap tell them what is happening and get on there housing list..you will be higher on the list as you have not made yourselves homeless but will have homeless points that put you higher on there list
i would go and see your local council housing officer who will ave you what to do
www.shelter.org.uk is a great site for tenants' rights.
if your in a lease she has to9 legally evict you,if no lease it is considered month to month and she can give you notice at the end of the month you have already paid for..and you have to go then or the judical sysem will help the landlord to get you out..no rights,
