What is the best way to plant Lily bulbs in containers. The bulbs are rather large?
Question:They were a gift, and I understand that they are a dwarf variety.
Answers:
I received some free lily bulbs last year and planted them in containers. It depends on the container size as to how many to plant. I put 5 in a largish tub and they came up a treat.
Make sure you plant them the correct way up and about 3-5 inches from the top of the soil.
You'll find that the stems seem to grow quite tall before you actually get a flower head on it.
They do take a while to emerge but can be quite beautiful when they do.
When they've finished flowering make sure you cut the tops off and you should get them coming up again next year.
Good luck with your bulbs, I'm sure they'll come up a treat.
i believe that the standard amount of soil around each one is at least 6 inches to best 12 inches apart ,
and i agree with what the first responder said,
kay
make sure the container is big enougth place in and cover with compost
Plant them in soil, root side down, top about 1" below soil. Don't overwater, as they will probably be dormant for part of the year. Check the Internet or a gardening book for your particular variety. Feed with bulb fertilizer at least every 6 months.
All of above OK , except "
Plant them in soil, root side down, top about 1" below soil. " Put them 1/2" -1" from the BOTTOM. Lillies are top-heavy . Put 'em 1" from the top, & they'll likely fall over & uproot . ( we use 4, or 5 in a 10" pan) When they're done, and you put them in the garden(s) , plant them 8-10" deep .
