i assume u mean that it has built a nest right inside the top. u need to go up and pull it out. might take a long pole with you if it is down a bit to knock it thru the bottom into the fireplace. while u are up there, install that chimney hat u bought from lowe's to prevent any more birdies from calling your home, their home. good luck.
Make sure it is empty, then use a chimney sweeps brush attached to a few rods to push it out. The birds will build there again next year if you dont put a cover on your chimney. I have had swallows, starlings and sparrows nesting in different parts of my roof for years. It does not bother me. Chimneys are different. You need to protect them.
i am going to be boring now, get a chimney sweep to clean it out, then get him to give you a certificate which is dated to prove that he as cleaned it, i am telling you this because if you ever have a fire that starts from your chimney the insurers will not pay you anything without that certificate. ps it as to be renewed every year. sorry to be so boring
