How can I safely get rid of rodents in the attic?

Question:My husband and I have been plagued by rodents (we think rats) that party around in our attic from sundown to sunrise. We can hear them running back and forth all night long and it's driving us nuts. Typically I would just go out and buy some poison like D-con, but we have a cat living in the house and also we are expecting a baby soon, and we don't want the risk of either getting poisoned. What is the best way to eliminate the rodents without posing any danger to the rest of our household?

Are you sure it's rats? Could it be squirrels? Anyway send your cat or a neighbor's cat up there to kill them. Or get a terrier dog. My family came from the south and the stories I heard growing up was incredible..gory but incredible.
