Does anyone know if distilled malt vinegar is the same as white household vinegar?
Question:I need to clean my babys steriliser and it says to use white household vinegar and my fella has brought some distilled malt vinegar what is clear in colour is it the same?!?! Thanx
Answers:
Traditionally malt vinegar is distilled and depending on the area is available in white or brown. In Kent we would expect to place brown malt vinegar on our chips and use white vinegar for cleaning.
When I moved to Scotland I found that they used white vinegar for their chips and cleaning.
I would have no problems in using the vinegar you have. (Note not all vinegar now is distilled)
Hope that this helps
Chris
No it is different.
They certainly don't taste the same but chemically they won't be much different so using the malt should be just fine.
Yes it is the same - but it has been distilled to remove the colour
It has a different taste, but for cleaning purposes, it's pretty much the same. It's the acid in it that makes it useful for cleaning, and that's in any kind of vinegar.
