Can a window unit air conditioner be put in a window sideways?

Question:We have a swamp cooler style small window air conditioning unit that is supposed to sit horizontally in the window, but we have windows that open left to right instead of up and down. Can we put the unit in the window sideways? Someone told me it might not work and could mess up the freon? Please help me figure it out, because it's really hot!

Answers:
I'd say don't mess with it at all. You could break it or even start a fire that way. One of my buddies was messing with an air conditioner in his window and accidentally dropped it four stories down onto a car!
Why not forgo the air conditioner and just use electric fans? They are cheaper, better on the environment and you won't be saddled with huge electrical bills. If it is really still too hot, wet some towels and hang one in each window.. as the water evaporates so the house cools, it is the same principle as an air conditioner... if you have a flat roof, spray some water periodically on it. As it evaporates it will also cool the house.

Were you dropped as a small child?
I don't think so... I agree with "Someone" that it would screw up your AC. Maybe call Sears and ask them...
No. The compressor needs a constant supply of oil running through it. If you mount the unit anyway but horizontally, you will burn up the compressor.
