With an electric hot water heater...what is cheaper...?
Question:We have an electric hot water heater. What is cheaper, using the dishwasher everyday, or washing the dishes out by hand. Some people told me that with the dishwasher, it fills up once and that is it. Washing though, I am not using up 2 sources of elctrisity at once What is the cheapest way to do the dishes? and please don't come back with a smart remark like use paper products. Thanx!
Answers:
you still end up saving in the end with the dishwasher, just put it on the airdry cycle.
By hand i'd think would be cheaper. But the dishwasher is much easier. That's why people use them.
I hate dishwashers since I've usually thoroughly rinse them clean before I stack them after a meal and before they ever see a dishwasher, IF they ever see ours, so, I wash mine by hand, in hot water, and let them drip dry in the rack. I may use a bit more water with my rinse-then-wash routine, but I'm just a "clean-a-holic" sometimes, but you'll use less electricity my way than using any darned dishwasher. God Bless you.
Run the dishwasher only when it is full. The dishwasher actually uses less water to do a load than hand washing. Most of the cost is from heating the water, therefore, using less water means less energy used. Make sure you have plenty of rinse aid in the dishwasher to prevent water spotting and then turn off the Heated dry cycle. They will air dry just fine! Also, turn the temperature down to 120 degrees on your water heater and install an insulation blanket on the outside of it if you dont already have one. Buy some foam pipe insulation and insulate the pipes coming out of the water heater. These ideas will save energy all the time, not just when washing dishes! Great question! We all need to be thinking about all the little ways we can reduce energy use! Living conservatively just makes sense!
