There is an essential oil called citronella which is a fantastic insect repellent. It works really well for midges. You would have to be really careful how you applied it though as it can irritate skin. Maybe you could dilute it in a lotion, or put it on your clothes. I get plagued with midges (maybe they like ginger blood!) I use a moisturiser from Avon called 'skin so soft' midges hate it, and it's not too expensive.
try mixing 1tsp borax and the juice from 2 cloves garlic with 1 pt water. Haven't tried it myself.
Put fresh lavender flowers in your rooms and make lots of herb sachets and pot pourrie to put in every room.
Or you can just buy pure essential oil of lavender and diffuse it (a few drops in water when using your essential oil burner)
Dap a drop either side of your temples (be careful not to rub your eyes), wash hands after use.
Apply a drop of Lavender essential oil to a tissue and place in your pocket.
Citronella candles are also available.
jeyes fluid is brill, it sterilises your soil too, make sure you mix it with water, its very strong
