Is there a way to build a house in a neighborhood that can float like a boat when it rains?
Question:I have been having dreams about an octagon house that floats when the dam breaks. The shape of the house in my dreams is what keeps it from tipping over and you just unplug the electric, phone lines, and a propane tank that is kept in the bottom of the house, so that it doesn't effect the gas? I have had this dream 3 times in a month now, So, is it possible? And if it is, would it be expensive to build?
Answers:
Your dreams are not that outlandish at all.
I have been thinking of a similar design myself, but in the context of trailers that would have this boat-like design you are talking about.
The trailers would be on pilasters that are sleeved with chains or cables attached so the trailer can rise to a specific height, but not so high that the trailer moves off its moorings.
As the flood water subsides, the trailer nestles back down on these sleeved or indexed pilasters.
The utility connections are a little more problematic, but there are ways to engineer these as well.
I think I remember an article in Popular Science about a year or more ago. This article dealt with a Dutch design of a house designed to float in case of a flood.
Perhaps every house should be designed to be a part-time house boat when the situation requires it.
Keep up the creative dreaming!
I'm in love with your concept!
yeah i think they invented what your looking for a long time ago...its called an ark
yes.. its called a houseboat. However if you live downstream from a dam the problem isnt the water its self its that the water is moving very very fast. to build a " normal " house that could and would float would be fairly expensive and would look very very odd to everybody else. In the long run it would be cheaper to sell your house thats in the path of the water and buy a house on a hill.
an octagonal shape could also be a STOP sign ! maybe you should STOP! having those dreams , OR maybe you should STOP doing something you should'nt be doing? or maybe , perhaps you just have to pee when you're dreaming? as far as expenses to build a really BIG STOP SIGN? contact your local government ie. zoning/commercial contract board?
um you can buy floating bricks so i guess thats possible and also its just a dream
There is a way to do just about anything in the building business if you have enough money and can hire someone with the right skills. However, the first thing that I would do is talk to the city building permit office and see what requirements they would have for a permanent structure that would do this
