Do beetles bite?
Question:I see this big beetles around in my garage and around my porch sometimes. I usually just let them be, sometimes my dog tries to eat them or kill them. I wonder, can they, or will they bite a person if they are handled? I don't like them around, and it's a hassle to try to get them into a cup or jar to move them somewhere else, and I don't want to step on them, because it makes a mess. Could I safely pick them up and move them with my hands without having to worry about them biting me?

Eh! Steve is so Homestar Runner! :-), and yes, most beetles can bite, so be careful!
heck yes! when i was a lil kid i used to run through our grass "bare-footed" and the next thing i knew i felt a pinch on one of my toes... it hurts too. i learned real quick to wear shoes from then on! we called em "pinching bugs" lol!
It depends on the beetles. Most crawling bugs are considered beetles. I assume you are talking about water beetles, the large black bugs that come out when it is warm and damp. I don't think they will bite or anything.
If you can get close enough to one, without being squeamish, look to see if these beetles have pincers surrounding their "mouths". If so, they will probably use them. It sounds like dark brown/blackish "water bugs", which are actually cockroaches, and these don't bite. If you live in the country, these are technically called "Wood's roaches". Disgusting, I know. However, they will cause no harm to you or poochie.
Japanese beetles (the gold/green/iridescent ones you find on grapevines and tomato plants) don't bite, but they do have barbs on their legs that help them climb, that can easily be mistaken for getting bitten.
And warning: Those cute, but annoying Multi-colored Lady Asian beetles, that pass themselves off as Lady Bugs (but are more pink than ladybugs and really, really put off an odor) and perform parades around many house windows in the summer, DO BITE. And, they are known to cause severe allergic reactions to quite a few people, taking on the form of asthma and allergy symptoms.
I'm sure that's more than you were asking for but when it comes to knowing your "insects", more is always better. ;)
Beetles that are big enough to bite will. However, you do
have to put your finger in its mouth. It can't turn its head
in order to get you. Using your thumb and for finger pick
it up from the sides.
