Can old washers and dryers be recycled, how to dispose of them?

Here are a few things you can do with them.
1. you can take them in for scrap to your recycle/junk yard (they will pay you)
2. you can call someone to come and get it who refurbishes them
3. you can put it in your garbage, but you usually have to call ahead

I think they can be taken to a scrap yard you can get money for however many lbs of metal you have
Call your local garbage company. Here (Michigan) we have a day once a month that they will pick up a large appliance with your garbage. :)
Try Freecycle. Freecycle is an organization where you can post your unwanted goods. If your appliances are still in working condition (or if not for parts or scrap) someone may have an interest in them. Look at www.freecycle.org for groups in your area. If someone wants the items they will come by and pick them up. It's amazing the stuff that I no longer needed that was of value to someone else (old exercise equipment, non working lawn mowers, scrap plywood, etc)
I agree with Freecycling. If there isn't one in your area, you could call a Used Appliance store. They may pick them up and then repair and resell them. Goodwill and the Salvation Army also take these.
maybe they can be repaired, depending on what's wrong with them it may be more expensive than it's worth. if not, a junk dealer may give you something for it. after that he will know what to do with it. (probably sell parts from it)
Some businesses refurbish washers and driers for resale and might be interested if yours are not too far gone. Check your yellow pages.
