Are large (yellow centre with black head and black rear) wood boring bees honey bees?

If they have a large white spot on their forehead, then yes, they are carpenter bees. They will eat a hole right through raw (unpainted) wood, even if it's pressure treated. They can do a good deal of damage pretty quickly. Paint the wood and that will help keep them away.
Keep in mind it may also be bumble bees. Eventhough bumbles are similar in size but they are stripped yellow and black
carpenter bees drill the holes; there is a large and similar looking bee that builds nests under ground and they make honey. Honey bees are small.
