Air conditioning up or down?

Question:When telling someone that you want the room cooler, do you say turn the air conditioning up or down? My boyfriend and I argue about the wordage on this all the time. I am interested in what others have to say. Thanks!

Answers:
You are turning UP the air conditioner to make it cooler by leaving the fan on for more extended periods of time.

Increase your clarity - "make the air conditioner colder" "lower the temperature" I mean you are not raising and lowering the air conditioner and most likely your thermostat is digital so you are not moving a lever up or down.
I think I would say down, meaning turning the thermostat to a lower number (degree) to make it cooler.
When you look at the temperature numbers on the control pad on the wall, the higher the number on there, the warmer it is going to be in your place. So if you turn it up, you will make it warmer. Try experimenting a little bit with it to see what happens. This will tell you what to tell others.
I D K . it seems like a stupid Q. to me?
