Sunflowers can be overwatered. This may be the problem. Let the soil dry before watering. Try watering every 3 or 4 days instead of every other day. Also, the plants may have been burned by too much fertilizer.
wow.. i love sunflower seeds
I have sunflowers all the time. THe birds plant them. I love feeding birds and they sometimes drop the seeds and they grow. I never water the plants, the only water they get is from what little rain we get. I am in NY and a family in PA grows sunflowers for the seeds to sell. They never do any thing to that big field of sunflowers. So I would suggest stop watering and stop fertalizing. They should be alright.
I have the same problem with one of my sunflowers. It's gotten way too big and has become just too heavy for it's own good. I think someone's been giving it steroids. J.K. The plants are top heavy. Sometimes the ground is still "airy" from turning the dirt over before planting the seeds so as the plant is starting to grow, put some of your body weight around it to compact the dirt .You might want to try that now too but also tie something around the stem and stake it. If your leaves are drooping i'm thinking they're not getting enough water although you'll notice during the hotness of the day the leaves do droop then at night they perk back up. But watering every other day sounds like they're getting plenty. ( I water mine every few days it's in the 70's here. ) Also don't add too much fertilizer. That stuff gets really hot and will kill off your plant. Next planting, try the 3 month fertilizer pellets. very simple and convienent. Or use Miracle gro 1x a week instead of the fertilizer. I only apply fertilizer to the dirt before I seed and then once more around the plant when it seems to me to be able to "handle" the boost.
