How can you kill off 17-year cicadas?
Question:17-year cicadas are coming back again and I do not want these things in my house or anywhere around me! Does anyone know an easy cure to kill them? And please don't say "Put bug spray all around your yard" because I don't want the use of toxic bug spray.
Answers:
You can't possibly kill them all. They will only be around for a month or so, they don't bother anything or anyone, other than with their singing. They are part of nature, live with it.
Don't worry, they'll die on their own.
I think there is nothing you can do, but have some kids collect them.
We experienced the 17-year cicadas a few years agon in the Washington DC area and I was amazed how many MILLIONS and MILLIONS of cicadas were out.
They do not harm you. They are just very noisy.
It was very fascinating.
Believe me I was not and I am not a bug-fan.but they do not do a thing and they do not come into your house.
i am wondering the same thing, they are nasty!
Although large trees can tolerate and may even benefit from the “damage” caused by egg-laying females, young trees can be severely damaged and should be protected. Because females make slits in small diameter branches, a sapling whose trunk and main branches are still small is at risk of having significant injury. In years when periodical cicadas emerge, young trees can be effectively protected so that the females cannot lay eggs on them. This may be done by covering the trees with loose “bags” of cheesecloth or screening, tied securely at the base. Larger, mature trees often respond to this “pruning” of the ends of the branches by producing more branches.
Please, just try to ignore them. They are more annoying than anything. I think it's kind of fascinating myself. They will nibble on some trees and shrubs, but basically they come up out of the ground, screech a lot because they are looking for a mate, mate, lay eggs or die.
Cats. They love to chase, catch and kill cicadas.
I lived in a neighborhood with these bugs (we called Kay-D-Dids) for 20 years. All they ever did was hang out in the trees(mainly the evergreens) make a noise that sounded like e-aw,e-aw.e-aw.
And left their skin sheddings when the got old in the trees.
Once out of the skins they waited for their new to dry and flew off.
Very Harmless...
THEY DON'T BITE OR STING.just noisy.
They only live 30 days so relax. Besides if you have a dog or a cat they will have a field they eating them. They are extremely rich in protein and are totally harmless. The only issues you will have to deal with are the annoying mating cries which can get as loud as a blender and that they crawl in packs so you may see none one day they may not be able to see your stairs next day.
