Is electric cheaper in an apartment or a house?

Question:Me and my friends kindda argued over who was right and we couldnt figure out if electric would be cheaper in a house or an apartment. Any suggestions?

Answers:
It really depends more on the square footage you are talking about. And what the charge per kilowatt hour you are being charged. When I lived in a two story townhome, it was poorly insulated, had single pained windows but was smaller square feet than the house I am in now. That being said, I only had a patio with outdoor lights and now I have yard landscaping and other draws on the electricity I didn't have in the condo. But, I paid more per kilowatt per hour in the condo than I do the house. So I paid more in electric bills for the 1600 foot condo than I do for a 2500 square foot home. Ironically, water and gas are much higher in a single family home than they were for the condo.

It depends on many things. The age of the house or apartment, and how well it's insulated. If it's old, it may have not enough insulation. Many people think that apartments are not as well built and generally the electricity would be higher, but that's not always true. Newer apartments are more energy-efficient than an older, drafty house.
It also depends on the layout of the apartments and how many are attached to you and how many exterior walls you have. I lived in an 1100 sq ft apt for 6 years (attached on 2 sides with other apts) and just bought a 1500 sq ft home and my electric bills have doubled. **Both are all electric
if the apartment is smaller then yes. you just need to remember to turn off the lights and tv's, keep the ac on auto, if you keep the ac at 78 and then put it on 82 when you arent home this really saves your electric bill, and just because u put the ac on at 68 doesnt me its gona get cool faster.
Electricity is cheaper where you use less of it.

You pay by how many kilowatts of the stuff you use per hour.

You could own a mansion with one working light bulb and hardly spend a dime on the stuff or live in a tent with an electric range in use all day and you'd be personally responsible for global warming.

So, there is no straight answer...it depends what you have.

As houses tend to be bigger it follows that you have more stuff in them..but as I've already shown, it doesn't have to be that way.
A living structure name makes no difference. What makes the difference is the efficiency of the heating or cooling unit, and how well your outter parimeter walls and roof is insolated. You both are actually wrong. The best system and most cost efficent is a heat/pump/cooling system. It is carefully setup to use gas/electric at set temp.s The right configuration can save 30-50% year on utilities with proper isolation.
It doesn't matter what type of dwelling you have electricity usage is based on consumption. It is billed at so much per kilowatt hour. On average the usage will be greater in a house because usually you have more space and consequently you have more things using electricity. For example you may have a washer and dryer in a house but not in an apartment or your air conditioning unit may use more electricity because it has to cool a larger space.
