Poison bait can work well, but you don't want to use it if there are pets and children in the home. Some are quite deadly - like those that contain arsenic. You need to know what the ants eat to choose the right bait. Basically, sweet or meat?
An alternative is boric acid, available at drug stores. Sprinkle it around where you see them. It's a lot safer than poison bait, but still not perfectly safe. Don't use it in areas pets or children can get to.
A third alternative is silica gel powder. Probably available at home centers. Works by getting onto insects and drying them out. It is harmful if breathed, but not if eaten.
You can make sure everything is absolutely clean, and keep food in the fridge or in sealed containers like tupperware. Kill all ants you see and wipe the area you've seen them walking with soap and water to clean up their scent trails. Scout ants are usually sent out to search for food and leave these little trails all over the place for more scouts. If you know where their nests are, you can bomb it with ant poisons or a can of Raidthat you can get at any hardware store.
There's actually a kind of ant poison that you can drop around places you've seen them. It's syrupy and sweet so the ants love it.. they'll eat it up and take it back to their nests and poison the whole lot. Just make sure you don't use it around pets and kids.
I also want to add, a ant killer lawn spray you attach to the hose and spray well around the fountaion and yard. Sticky traps work well too, non posion. use something sweet as a bait in the center.
If the yard and foundation is sprayed, that will stop the new infestation, and then plenty of traps inside to catch the existing. Cans of Ant killer spray is good to have for a major infested area.. be sure to venitate well and keep up good after they are dead...
