Answers:
just a little at a time start w/ fertilizer
just keep the grass down and the beds free for now and in time your get to know what you want to do.. plus if you can get some of those solar lights they make the garden look nice at night and there cheap
good luck..
well first you need to watch the areas one day when you are home and see what kind of light they get - +4 hours of sun will be "full sun", less than 4 is partial sun, or part shade. No sun is "Shade" Then go to your local garden center and see what is available. I would suggest planting a mixture of periennals(comes back every year) and annuals(live one year and then die)
How lovely, may be you could star on testing the soil. These kits can be picked up at any gardening centre, then when you know what the soil is like you can look at what will grow well on it.You could put in flowers in tubs or in the ground at the front. At the back you might like to grow some veg. There are some wonderful web sites as www.dobbies.co.uk or www.suttons.co.uk,i use both of these for the allotment where i grow both flowers and others.
why don't you start with the top and work your way to the bottom tier, maybe if you make a plan as to how you want it that might help.
